I'm using a Macbook Air and therefore have to insert the disks into a Superdrive because the laptop has no CD drive but the installation windows came up fine and when I was asked where to install my 1TB hard drive was an option and I installed there. The games installed into a folder called Applications though only the base game has application in its file type when you open this folder the rest are classified as Alias. The read me files also installed here. The other game stuff appeared in My Documents on my Mac as expected and I have been able to add mods and content there.
However when I insert Generations and try to launch the game I ran into big problems. The disk displays in the corner but there is no icon and it is titled simEP04 rather than Generations. When you double click the disk it attempts to install again. When I launch the game from the icons on my hard drive first the Sims 3 icon appear briefly in the tray then the Generations icon appears. The launcher starts to open however it is see through. I am prompted to patch though only the words are visible hovering above my desktop background. When I click okay the launcher becomes more substantial but still parts are see through and there is no play button for the game. The update downloads but then states 'You cannot apply this patch on this version of the application, please reinstall'.
I have no idea what to do! I just want the game to play - PLEASE HElP - I'll be so grateful for any assistance.
There's no easy answer to this question. Programs that come with installers install to the startup drive by default but some do let you change the installation location. Even though the installer lets you chance the location that doesn't mean that everything will get installed to the specified location - many programs (including games) install resources in other locations - on the startup drive. If the program doesn't have an installer - like those that are dragged to the Applications folder from a disc or disk image - it may or may not run from an external drive.
Running games off an external drive on Bootcamp Is this even possible? My initial idea (on another post) was to buy an external SSD, install windows on it and have that as a windows + games drive, in that case the games would be installed in the same drive as windows is installed.

But all is not lost. You can install the Mac OS on the external drive and boot up with it when you want to play a game. After installing the Mac OS on the external, install your game(s) on it. That will put the drives on the startup drive - which is the external drive. Of course the downside is you'll have to reboot to play a game but it isn't a huge inconvenience.
